The Monarch Officially Removes Andrew of HRH Style and Prince Title
In a decisive action, the reigning monarch has formally removed the former Duke of York of his Royal Highness attribute and his princely title.
These alterations were formalized by publishing letters patent under the official state seal, which were recorded in the Gazette.
The entry declared: “His Majesty has been graciously inclined by letters patent under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘HRH’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince of the realm’.”
A separate entry affirmed the stripping of the dukedom from the roll of peerage, effective immediately.
The notice stated: “The king has been pleased by warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his secretary of state to ensure the Duke of York to be removed from the roll of the peerage.”
Context of the Decision
This decision follows increasing controversy over the former prince's connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of a memoir by Virginia Giuffre.
Giuffre alleged that she was sexually abused by Andrew after being trafficked by Epstein, claims that Mountbatten Windsor has always strenuously denied.
Procedure of Title Removal
Charles employed his royal prerogative—accepted authorities held by the sovereign—following discussions with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through parliamentary means.
Royal instruments and warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to grant or revoke titles and honors.
Because the HRH style is conferred by letters patent, it can be revoked through the same instrument.
Additional Actions and Support
Following the initial announcement, the lord chancellor was instructed to draft the required paperwork for the title removals.
The decision also includes Andrew relinquishing his lease on Royal Lodge, a thirty-room Crown Estate property where he has resided for two decades.
The government endorsed the king's move.
Retained Honor
Despite the loss of titles, it was confirmed that Andrew will retain his South Atlantic medal, granted for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
