Thomas Tuchel Criticizes Home Fan Atmosphere Despite Comfortable Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel shared his sadness that the Three Lions team did not get more backing from the Wembley spectators during their commanding friendly win against Wales on Thursday night.
Tuchel was pleased to see his side continue their strong performance, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the first 20 minutes effectively ending the game. However, he was unhappy with the mood at the national stadium.
“With limited sessions to get ready against a well-trained team and we excelled,” the coach stated. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the additional ones. It was quiet. We didn’t get support back from the stands. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you give in the first quarter? We prevented them escape. When you only hear just the Welsh supporters for half an hour, it’s sad because the squad deserved greater backing today.”
“I maintain this statement. There’s nothing more than being three goals up in a rivalry match. I hoped for a bit more support in phases where it gets difficult.”
“After halftime, to get behind us, there was excessive support for Wales. It might have aided us to refocus, but it is what it is and so be it.”
Selection Choices Justified by Performance
Away from potentially starting a fight with fans, the manager also created controversy by excluding Bellingham and Foden from his squad. But the decision was validated by Morgan Rogers excelling in the attacking midfield role and getting his first international goal.
“That’s his style,” the head coach said. “He operates as an attacking midfielder and he is vying for his position.”
Bellamy Seeks Lessons from Loss
Craig Bellamy hopes that his team, who face Belgium in a key qualifying match on next week, improve after their poor performance in the opening period.
“This is why I scheduled this friendly,” the manager said. “I need to see where we are. Where do we want to go? Who do we want to be? Today gives me motivation.”
Fitness Worry for Watkins
Watkins was withdrawn at the break after hitting a post and may miss out when the national team face Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on next week.
